Beautycounter’s new vitamin C Serum – my review & results!

I’m going to be honest, prior to Beautycounter launching their new Vitamin C Serum, I hadn’t really ever tried one. I had NO idea just how magical it could be! Then, I started wondering why I waited so long! I’ve recently added the All Bright Serum to my routine, and it’s been a game changer to say the least! Today, on the blog, I’m sharing why I love it and some before and after photos.

While I had a well-founded skincare routine for years, I never really thought about a vitamin C serum. WHY did I wait soooo long?! Maybe, subconsciously, I was waiting for Beautycounter to launch their Vitamin C serum, which was worth it! When it launched, I was quick to try it, because I love all of their other skincare. To be fair, the serum launched a few years ago, and due to the sensitive nature of my skin, I wanted to make sure this was a product I could stand behind. Honestly, prior to trying it I was super happy with my skin and how bright it looked, but I truly didn’t understand just how much brighter it could possibly get with a supplementation like vitamin C! Now I feel like it glows so easily, with or without makeup. When I was pregnant, with my two boys, I so wish I had something like this to keep my melasma at bay, which would have resulted in more confidence and wearing less makeup all around. Better late than never! Lately, I’ve been wearing more Skin Twin since I’m enjoying a little more coverage, but with warmer weather ahead, I always grab for the Dew Skin tinted moisturizer with a little concealer.

Beautycounter Vitamin C Serum Review

After Vitamin C Serum

Here is a photo of me after using the serum for 6 weeks.

Before Vitamin C Serum

This is about three months before the serum. My skin looked great, but I immediately notice that overall my skin looks brighter and more vibrant. An overall glowy look, if you will - you can see the lightness in the top photo compared to the bottom. I also have an age spot on my upper left forehead that has really lightened up!

I am serious about taking good care of my skin and weekly, I get asked what my skincare routine looks like.

There are many vitamin C serums on the market, so deciding which one to choose can be tricky. You might assume that the higher the percentage of vitamin C, the better, but this is not always the case. If you get too high a percentage, this can be irritating to the skin, while if the concentration is too low, the product won’t be that effective. Since I have sensitive skin, I don’t want a vitamin C that will be irritating to me skin. Most brands on the market use 15% vitamin C, but you need to consider how stable that type of vitamin C is. It’s important to note, that many brands claim 15% concentration don’t live up to the claim when tested. This happens because the vitamin C isn’t stable. Beautycounter All Bright Serum uses a total of 10% of ultra-stable vitamin C from Japan. The two types are 5% bis-glyceryl ascorbate and 5% tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. The ingredients, above, were specifically selected for their stability and efficacy over time.

Is there a difference in the type of vitamin C used? Yes! A lot of high end, popular, and more expensive vitamin C brands use a less stable form of vitamin C, 15% L-Ascorbic Acid. So it’s important to know which type of vitamin C you are purchasing. Personally, I like the idea of less irritating vitamin C with more stable features allowing the serum to actually work, and not losing potency while sitting on the shelf over time. This is why you are seeing many high-end skincare brands selling do it yourself products where you mix the L-ascorbic acid vitamin C with a serum just before using. They are trying to maximize the stability of an ingredient that is very unstable and losses effectiveness quickly.

FRESH TIP

Let’s take a peek at cost. A leading vitamin C serum on the market costs $166 for 30 ml, while the Beautycounter Vitamin C serum is $90 for 30 ml. That is less than half the price! The more expensive serum, also uses L-ascorbic acid, and as we already discussed above, which that form of vitamin C is not very stable. So you are paying twice the amount for a product that will lose effectiveness overtime. I know which one I’m choosing!

  • You want to use your vitamin C serum during the day, not at night. At night, the BFF to the All Bright vitamin C Serum is the Overnight Resurfacing Peel.

  • To use the vitamin C serum, first wash and dry your face. Then use your toner and your regular serum if you use one. Then layer the All Bright C Serum on top, applying it to your face, neck, and décolletage. Follow with your daytime moisturizer.

  • I personally recommend using the vitamin C serum every day or every other day depending on your skin type. You will notice the most improvement by using every day. I find that I only need one pump, which will be enough to cover your entire face.

For my skin, which is prone to acne and is sensitive, and I have found that I do best when I apply this AFTER my daily workout. I use this post workout cleanser and proceed with what I call my Sunshine Serum!

One of the many reasons I love Beautycounter, and I have written a lot more about how we test and measure what is safer for us, but as someone with chronic health issues and an autoimmune disease, I will only use skincare products that I know are good for my health.

Beautycounter’s vitamin C serum is formulated without ethoxylated ingredients (including PEGs) due to their reproductive and developmental concerns. It’s also made without any dyes or fragrances.

Beautycounter is the only beauty company to third-party test for safety. They ban over 1,800+ harmful + questionable ingredients, ethically source ingredients, are committed to environmental sustainability, and have the strictest safety screening program to date. All of their products are formulated with the most vulnerable populations in mind, meaning that they are safe for everyone, including women who are both pregnant and breastfeeding. Their values of education, transparency, and advocacy align with mine, which is why I use, trust, and recommend Beautycounter always.

This vitamin C serum is also vegan, Leaping Bunny certified and EWG certified. It’s also gluten-free! Being completely gluten-free myself, this is important to me to be using products that are gluten-free for my health.

Beautycounter’s vitamin C serum also comes in glass packaging, which is not only better for the environment, but it also ensures that harmful chemicals and hormone disruptors won’t leach from the packaging into the product (which can happen with certain types of plastic packaging) - Yuck!

How is it different from the Beautycounter Brightening Oil?

Beautycounter also has a vitamin C oil, which is amazing, but the difference is that the serum will be much more effective at brightening. I like to think of our oils at Beautycounter as a means of hydration and balancing your skin, then other factors like brightening and lighting are secondary. So if you are looking for a substantial amount of brightening & lightening, reducing dark spots, and/or improving dullness, you’ll want the new Vitamin C serum rather than the Beautycounter Brightening Oil. You can purchase the All Bright Serum here!

P.S. Any product you use on a regular basis should be cleaned often (psst: your beauty cabinet will look and feel much nicer when you’re finished, too). So, grab the soap, a little water, and get cleansing. As you clean, be sure to check each period-after-opening (PAO) symbol while you’re at it. Beautycounter products specify the number of months that you can expect them to be safe for use. Look for a tiny period-after-opening (PAO) symbol of an open lid pot with a note like “12M”, which means the product’s lifespan is 12 months from the time you open it if it’s been stored and used properly. You may be due to replace some of your old #betterbeauty—which will make it, well, even better.
