Counter Body Care for Dry Skin My Four Favorites and How to Choose

Health + Wellness

Dry legs, rough elbows, and that tight feeling after a shower can make body care feel like one more thing to figure out. I want a routine that’s simple to keep up with and includes products I enjoy using.

Beautycounter was my first real love in clean beauty. Today, I use a blend of Counter, formerly Beautycounter, and Oliveda, and I love both brands equally. My favorites from each have a place in my routine.

For this guide, I’m focusing on four Counter body products I love: Hydrating Body Lotion, Superquench Body Butter, Luminous Hydration Body Oil, and Sugarbuff Body Polish. Here’s how they differ and how to choose a starting point for dry skin.

Start With Moisture and a Gentler Shower Routine

Before adding products, look at your shower habits. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short, warm showers, gentle cleansing, and applying moisturizer while skin is still damp. For very dry skin, creams and ointments generally provide more moisture than lotions.

I’ve written about seasonal dryness in my cold-weather skincare tips. Living in New England makes this topic especially relevant when the heat turns on and the air gets dry.

Now, let’s look at the Counter products I love—and where each fits.

Hydrating Body Lotion for a Lighter Everyday Moisturizer

If you prefer a lighter texture, Hydrating Body Lotion is the first product I’d consider.

Counter describes it as fast absorbing and unscented. Its formula includes jojoba butter and safflower seed oil to moisturize and soften skin.

Choose this if: You want a straightforward body moisturizer and enjoy a lighter feel. If that doesn’t leave your skin comfortable, consider a richer cream instead.

Superquench Body Butter for a Richer Moisturizing Step

Superquench Body Butter is the option I’d put on your list if you enjoy a richer texture. I love this one, too, choosing between the lotion and butter comes down to what your skin needs and what you like applying.

The current formula contains shea butter, mango butter, and acacia seed extract. Counter describes its texture as rich and velvety, with a Neroli Nectar scent.

Choose this if: You want a richer body moisturizer and enjoy scented body care. The butter is a moisturizer; you don’t need the lotion underneath it as a required extra step.

Luminous Hydration Body Oil for a Soft Sheen

If you love body oils, Luminous Hydration Body Oil is worth exploring. It’s another favorite of mine and offers a different finish from a cream.

Counter’s formula includes argan, rosehip, and passionfruit oils. It’s scented with Neroli Nectar and designed to leave a luminous sheen. The brand recommends using it after a shower or bath and following with lotion or body butter for extra hydration.

Choose this if: You enjoy an oil texture and a glowy finish. You can keep your routine to one moisturizer if you don’t want an additional layer.

For more of my earlier thoughts on moisture and oils, read my skin barrier post. It focuses primarily on facial skincare, so follow each body product’s own directions.

Sugarbuff Body Polish for Optional Exfoliation

Sugarbuff has appeared in my earlier skincare and body-care routine, so longtime readers may recognize the name. It remains one of the body products I love.

The current Sugarbuff uses finely milled cane sugar with sweet almond and sunflower oils, and has a Neroli Nectar scent. Counter directs users to massage it onto damp skin, rinse, and follow with a moisturizer.

Choose this if: Your skin tolerates a physical scrub and you want an occasional smoothing step. It’s optional: dry skin needs moisture, and irritated, cracked, sunburned, or broken skin should not be scrubbed. Gentle pressure matters, and more exfoliation isn’t necessarily better.

Body Lotion vs Body Butter vs Body Oil

What you prefer Where I’d start

A lighter, unscented moisturizer Hydrating Body Lotion

A richer, scented moisturizer Superquench Body Butter

An oil texture with a luminous finish Luminous Hydration Body Oil

A scrub for skin that handles exfoliation Sugarbuff Body Polish

I love all four, but you don’t need all four to take care of your skin. If you’re starting from scratch, choose a moisturizer first. Add an oil or occasional polish only if you enjoy it and your skin tolerates it.

A Simple Body Care Routine for Dry Skin

  1. Cleanse gently. Keep your shower warm and brief, and choose a gentle cleanser.

  2. Moisturize promptly. Gently pat your skin and apply your moisturizer without a long wait. Follow your chosen product’s directions.

  3. Add an oil if you want it. Follow the oil’s layering instructions rather than assuming every formula works the same way.

  4. Keep exfoliation optional. Skip the scrub when your skin feels irritated, sore, or unusually dry.

A note on scent: the oil, body butter, and polish above are scented. If your dry skin is sensitive or easily irritated, choose fragrance-free products. Persistent cracking, bleeding, or painful dryness deserves a dermatologist’s advice.

Why There’s Room for Both Counter and Oliveda

You don’t have to choose one brand for every step. I love Counter and Oliveda equally, and I’m happy to help you find products from either that fit what you enjoy using.
