Three Skincare Rules I Live By

I can’t tell you just how concerned I am day after day, the news reporting cancer causing carcinogens in products, almost on the daily. This is what they catch! Imagine what else is on the market that we don’t know about. I want to use products on my skin that are good for my health.

Why is it important to use clean skincare?

The FDA allows chemicals known to cause cancer including parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, lead and more to be used in products we use on ourselves and our families each day. The very product that is intended to “clean” or “beautify” can make you toxic and actually harm your health.

It dawned on me a few months ago, while in Washington, DC, I was there advocating for safer beauty laws (blog post here, why), listening to leading experts in the field about how endocrine disruptors wreak havoc on our health and also the environment.

There are no strict guidelines on what can be called clean or natural, which makes it complicated for a skin-care consumer.

You see, our skin is our body’s biggest organ and an essential part of our immune system.

And it literally eats much of what is applied to it, absorbing whatever it is into your bloodstream and organs…

Including the toxins!

Unfortunately, most cosmetics and personal care products today contain a wide range of toxins you definitely don’t want on your skin, especially as you age.

These toxins run havoc on your body and potentially may make you more prone to disease and leave awful side effects... like advanced aging and fatigue.

To avoid these problems, here are 3 rules that I live by:

Rule #1 - Check the labels. What’s in it?

Look very closely at the ingredient labels to make sure the ingredients are truly organic, natural, and safe.

Some of the best ingredients for your healthy, youngest-looking skin, for example, are plant-derived ingredients nasturtium flower extract (Tropaeolum Majus Flower Extract) and fermented sugars.

Nasturtium flower extract helps reinforce the skin barrier while providing potent oxygenation benefits to protect and defend skin from drying environmental stressors.

Fermented Sugars (Biosaccharide Gum-1), blends fermented sugars to help soothe skin while helping slow the visible effects of aging by optimizing hydration for renewed skin.

If the label reads like a science project with a bunch of "chemical-ly" sounding names, I would skin it.

And if you’re shopping online, and it doesn’t share ALL the ingredients on the page? Skip it.

Rule #2 - Choose products that are tested for safety and the website shows you how they do it.

Choose a company that uses many ingredients that are certified organic, natural, or naturally derived. It is important to know that “organic” and “natural” do not have legal definitions in the cosmetic industry; companies can say that a product is organic when in fact there are no certified organic ingredients in it, or there are only a couple. A lot of products in the beauty aisle also make claims about health: “hypoallergenic,” “natural,” or “doctor-approved” may come to mind. Unfortunately, a lot of these terms are meaningless. Be mindful about this, and also make sure your company you are supporting has 100% transparency.

Never get bamboozled by a product that simply calls itself natural, wild-crafted, "paraben free" or organic in its marketing.

That could mean a single organic ingredient amidst a sea of toxic ingredients!

Make sure there are health and safety standards that go well beyond what is legally required in the United States. Like, The Never List™ which is made up of more than 1,800 questionable or harmful chemicals that we never use as ingredients in our products. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beautycounter and found to be of concern.

Rule #3 - It’s not just about Collagen.

Collagen has gotten a lot of attention, and it is a critical component to healthy, young-looking skin. I wrote a blog post specifically about why it’s so important to support a company testing their collagen as well for heavy metals, etc.

But just like the food you eat...

Your skin needs a range of nutrition to look its best and protect you from toxins and disease.

Elastin, like collagen, is another natural protein in your body, and the loss of it leads to skin that looks wrinkled, loose, and otherwise "old."

If you’re trying to prevent or reduce signs of skin aging, then you’ve probably heard that it’s a good idea to add a retinol cream or serum into your nightly routine. But what about a peptide serum? Peptides are the building blocks of proteins, and proteins — like collagen and elastin — are important components of your skin that keep it firm and youthful.

Fortunately, Beautycounter Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum combines the benefits of both retinol and peptides into one serum. The serum features a tripeptide (N-Prolyl Palmitoyl Tripeptide-56 Acetate) along with bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative.

Your Skin Deserves The Best Safer For You Product

Here’s the deal: if you research anti-aging skincare, you’ll find LOTS of products that make lots of claims about how they will reverse your aging skin and some may make a big difference in your skin’s appearance. But the reality is that many of those products have ingredients in them that aren’t safe.

Bottom Line:

I’ve used all the products for over three years now, and I can safely say that I can 100% recommend them. I even used all of these throughout my healthy journey. It’s one thing to call products safe, but a whole other thing when they’re safe and actually work. To shop more clean products and add them to your cart, click here
