Beautycounter's Dew Skin Review

I’m going to be honest, prior to Beautycounter I hardly ever wore SPF daily! Gasp, I know! When, I found Dew Skin I was seriously impressed! I know you may be thinking, can it really be that good?! The answer is YES! Dewy, glowing skin combined with SPF and light coverage. Is there anything better? Finally, I had an answer to help protect the side of my face where I get sun spots from driving around town and the UV rays hitting my skin!

I have tried out my fair share of safer foundations over the years and the past few years, I was on the hunt for a tinted moisturizer with SPF. This is what I wear most days when I’m working from home, walking to and from the gym, and dressed in athleisure, mostly all day long! I put it on first thing in the morning as a hydration + SPF bridge while I take my outdoor walk prior to hitting the gym to strength train.

I love that it has the SPF built in for when I’m walking to outside or driving around for a quick errand.

The coverage is sheer to help create and even out my complexion, cover up the spots, and help me achieve that beachy sun kissed glow. The eight different shades are quite forgiving, but I usually wear shade 3 or 4 depending on the season. Beautycounter has really done it this time, with combining a daily SPF, and a hint of color that also leaves my skin looking youthful, natural, and glowy. Let's find out why Beautycounter’s Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer is a staple in my makeup routine.

While I had a well-founded skincare routine for years, I was never a big makeup wearer until I actually found Beautycounter. I think because of how sensitive my skin is, all makeup would either bother my eyes and make them water or I’d break out. I’ve been wearing more Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer lately, knowing that I won’t break out from applying it, and it hydrates my skin all day long. Not only that, but I’m really enjoying this natural and easy look with a simple dab of a lip sheer conditioner (favorite color currently is petal), my favorite mascara (blog post here why), and I’m ready for my day!

I have tried out my fair share of safer tinted moisturizers over the years. Since turning 47, I have also started to prioritize a daily facial sunscreen. What I noticed is the side of my face was getting a lot of sun spots due to driving my car daily, the sun would hit it just at the right angle, which left me with more sunspots on my left cheek than I wanted! I knew I needed to add something on my face for added protection. Beautycounter has really created the perfect moisturizer combining a daily SPF, with a hint of color that also leaves my skin looking youthful, natural, and glowy. It is such a staple in my routine now that I’ve found something that works for my skin.

I’m really picky about any kind of moisturizer, or tinted moisturizer because I have always had SUPER sensitive skin, where almost anything made me break out, so it was important to me to use this for some time, prior to writing my blog post.

WHAT IS BEAUTYCOUNTER’S DEW SKIN?

Beautycounter’s Dew Skin is breathable, natural looking and is perfect for anyone looking to even out skin tone and provide sun protection. It blends like a dream, and you seriously can’t even tell you have a product on. I dislike anything where it feels like my skin can’t breathe.

Beautycounter is the leader in clean and diligently screens their ingredients for harmful metals. You might not know this, as I didn’t prior to aligning as a brand advocate with Beautycounter, but we test the ingredients used in our color cosmetics and finished cosmetic products obsessively—multiple times—before they go to market. We only use validated test methods and the most advanced laboratory equipment available (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer, ICP-MS). This allows us to test for heavy metals at concentrations ten times lower than what is standard practice in the beauty industry (1 part per billion vs 10 parts per million). This fires me up!

Black Currant Seed – contains essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which can improve the texture and firmness of your skin. It can also regulate how much oil your face produces. This was something I always had a false sense of, because I always thought if my skin was oily, I couldn’t wear something in a dewy finish or with oil, but what I realized is that it was quite amazing, and it works amazing for my skin. It helps balance out my skin, even if I’m producing more oil.

  • Peony Root Extract – helps to regulate the oil your face produces, as well as diminish dark age spots over time, which helps brighten your skin overtime.

  • Vitamin C – has been used for years to help boost collagen production in the skin when applied topically. It also helps even out skin tone and brighten when used regularly. It’s important to note, Beautyocunter also uses the right form, which actually does improve skin appearance. Basically, to sum it up, it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines.

  • Non-Nano Zinc Oxide – I was really looking for a safer sunscreen option in my tinted moisturizer, and this fit the bill. You can read about why choosing a safer sunscreen over a chemical one here. If you’d like a more in depth explanation, I have a video here.

You can read more about Beautycounter’s “Never List” and/or use EWG Skin Deep Website that is super helpful to help you evaluate your current products’ safety.

With Beautycounter products, it’s important to note, all products are subject to stringent safety testing. Each batch is tested for heavy metals to ensure it meets our strict safety measures. We’re highly selective when it comes to pigments; out of the 65 cosmetic colorants allowed in the US, Beautycounter prohibits the vast majority–only using 18 colorants in our color cosmetics.

One of the best things with Dew Skin, it’s super blendable and the shades are very forgiving! For reference, in the summer I use shade 4 and in the winter I gravitate to shade 3.

Here is my before and after photo - using shade number 3

When using it, you’ll just add 2, (maybe 3) pumps to the palm of your hand and then use your fingertips, a foundation brush or damp beauty blender to blend it into the skin. Continue to apply until you have the coverage you want, I typically start with 1-2 pumps which I find is enough and then add or pat in areas I feel might need a bit more coverage.

You can see all the makeup I use in this post, I also have a more in depth live demonstration and makeup tutorial, here. (Also, here’s the skincare line I use, which I think it’s important to have great skin first and foremost then add makeup if you want to!)

BB stands for beauty balm or blemish balm. A BB Cream has less coverage than a foundation but more than a tinted moisturizer, while also offering a bunch of additional skincare benefits. The most noticeable difference between a BB cream and a tinted moisturizer is that it can prime your skin as well as moisturize. What I’ve found to be super helpful to create more of a BB feel and look, I apply our makeup primer, first and then 1-2 pumps of Dew Skin, and it feels like a BB cream to me! Plus, I get all the amazing ingredients in Dew Skin to help lighten and brighten while adding glow!

Here is how I prep my skin for Dew Skin in the morning:

  1. Cleanse my favorite daily face wash is this daily exfoliating cleanser.

  2. Prep – my favorite is the Radiance Toner

  3. Treat – I am OBSESSED with this serum. It’s one of those products where you start to see results right away. My skin is so soft, firm, and more even when I use it regularly.

  4. Moisturize l use this adaptive moisture lotion after my daily serum.

  5. Primer this primer is one of my favorite ways to prep my skin before using Dew Skin. It has tripeptides and Biopolymer, which enhances the complexion of your skin. I have found that any makeup I may be wearing during the day/nighttime, when I apply a primer, it has the staying power to last all day long.

  6. Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer – I use 2 pumps of shade 3 or 4 depending on the season, you can use the better blender to help apply or a foundation brush as well.

TIP:

If I was stranded on a desert island and could only bring one product, this would be a top choice of mine! Here’s why: The overnight resurfacing peel when used every other night or 3xs a week to slough off old skin cells, it helps boost radiance and skin texture which means it’ll help your makeup set beautifully! If you want to make sure your makeup looks as flawless as it can, and not settle into your pores, which ultimately I think makes us look older, I HIGHLY recommend that you prioritize a daily skincare routine and a weekly exfoliating treatment! Your makeup can only apply as smoothly as the canvas it is being painted on (i.e., your skin!).

The most obvious difference between Skin Twin Foundation and Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer is the amount of coverage that each offers. If you’re looking for coverage as well as color, foundation is probably best for you. That’s because it has a much higher pigment than tinted moisturizers do. Pigment is the fine, loose powder element within your foundation that’s responsible for color correction and coverage. It also works to conceal blemishes, pimples, and fine lines.

To sum it all up, the real benefits of Beautycounter’s Tinted Moisturizer Dew Skin vs. Skin Twin Foundation all come down to the look you are going and/or your desire to include an SPF in your makeup routine. Dew Skin is sheer, lightweight coverage that helps to create a more even-looking skin tone, while non-nano SPF 20 mineral sunscreen works to protect against the sun’s damaging rays, while Skin Twin does not. Skin Twin Featherweight Foundation is breathable, buildable coverage with hyaluronic acid to visibly plump the skin. It’s your match made in makeup. It also provides buildable coverage and comes in an expansive 27 different shades. I prefer to wear Dew Skin on a daily basis, but love using Skin Twin for fancier evenings out or on a date.

As you may know, one of the many reasons I love Beautycounter, and I have written a lot more about how we test and measure what is safer for us, but as someone with chronic health issues and an autoimmune disease, I will only use skincare products that I know are good for my health.

Beautycounter is the only beauty company to third-party test for safety. They ban over 1,800+ harmful + questionable ingredients, ethically source ingredients, are committed to environmental sustainability, and have the strictest safety screening program to date. All of their products are formulated with the most vulnerable populations in mind, meaning that they are safe for everyone, including women who are both pregnant and breastfeeding. Their values of education, transparency, and advocacy align with mine, which is why I use, trust, and recommend Beautycounter always.
