Look Optic Blue Light Reading Glasses Review

Ok, my mom warned me about this! She mentioned that when I turn 40 I’d probably need glasses. I was in denial for a while and stubborn, but I swear I turned 42 and bam my eyes were like nope, not today! We aren’t going to work like we used to. Did you know, as you get older, your eyes will naturally start to change. Remember, I was in disbelief when my mom would forewarn me about this! This can happen in a variety of ways, but one of the most common changes is caused by a condition known as “presbyopia”. This is generally what causes people to need reading glasses after the age of 40.

What are the symptoms of presbyopia?

Symptoms of presbyopia include:

  • Trouble seeing things up close

  • Needing to hold reading materials farther away to focus on them

  • Eye strain (when your eyes feel tired or sore)

  • Headache

Presbyopia gets worse over time, but it usually stops getting worse after age 65. Ok, so this may be the one thing I look forward to with aging… maybe I’ll stop losing my eyesight!

I started with reading glasses at 1.0, then had an eye exam and moved to 2.0 but found them way too strong, so I had to go to 1.5. 2.0 felt best at the time during my exam but then wearing them all day, coaching clients and reading, it was too much of an adjustment for the eyes.

WHY I LOVE LOOK OPTIC’S MISSION

To start, I’m very passionate about the environment, which is one of the many reasons I love to support a company using material that 100% Recycled. They have partnered with TerraCycle (a leader in recycling the hard to recycle) to give their old frames, lenses and hinges new life. The result? Frames transformed into running tracks, playgrounds, and more... How cool is that?!

They also have a partnership with the Lion's Club, where they help refurbish and redistribute old frames to those in need, keeping them from becoming one of the four million pairs that end up in landfills each year. Now we are getting there!

You can also donate or recycle your old frames and receive 25% Off your next purchase. (Frames do not have to be LOOK OPTIC).

But to me, on top of this mission, my readers have to be comfortable, and you know, stylish somewhat too!

WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE WEARING BLUE LIGHT READING GLASSES

Do you find yourself feeling like your eyes are fatigued, or getting frequent headaches, as you go about your day? The problem might be linked to blue light. We spend so much time looking at electronic devices, and the screens pump out high-energy blue light. For a lot of people, that light can actually cause eye problems. When I started paying attention I definitely noticed a difference, when I brought blue light reading glasses into my daily routine.

What I’ve noticed with using blue light glasses:

  • SLEEPING MORE EASILY AT NIGHT

Too much bright blue light prevents your brain from releasing the hormone melatonin naturally, which is one of the main chemicals that helps you sleep. That's why it can be so hard to fall asleep after looking at screens all day. Filter it out with blue light reading glasses, and sleeping becomes easier!

  • REDUCTION OF EYE STRAIN

Taking in too much high-energy light causes your eyes to work too hard, leading to eye-strain headaches. Filtering out the blue light prevents this.  Also, blue light glasses reduce the contrast on your screen, which can similarly help reduce eye strain.

  • FEWER HEADACHES

There hasn’t been a ton of conclusive research on this, but I do notice that when I don’t wear my blue light readers, I do have more strain and my neck and upper forehead feels much tighter than it needs to be, which a lot of times shifts into experiencing a headache.

If you have been using a device that emits blue light, you may notice these symptoms:

  • squinting

  • burning, stinging, sore, or itchy eyes

  • blurry vision

  • tension in facial, neck, and shoulder muscles

  • increased sensitivity to light

  • headache

TIPS TO HELP AVOID GETTING A HEADACHE FROM BLUE LIGHT

Try the 20/20/20 method

If you use an LED device for hours at a time, you can reduce the risk of DES with this simple strategy. Stop every 20 minutes, focus on an object around 20 feet in the distance, and study it for about 20 seconds. The change in the distance gives your eyes a rest from up-close and intense focusing.

Adjust your workstation to help you maintain better posture

  • Adjust the backrest on your chair or use a lumbar support pillow to make sure your lower back stays at a 90-degree angle to your hips.

  • Work on the height of your chair and armrests, so your shoulder can relax while you type.

  • Try to make sure your keyboard an inch or two above your thighs.

  • Place your monitor screen at eye level to avoid tilting your neck too much.

  • Use a screen to reduce the glare from your devices.

  • Keep your monitor 20 to 26 inches from your body.

Try to take breaks for a bit and stretch out your shoulders and back.

Change the light settings on your device

Your device should be able to switch from blue light to warmer tones at night. It’s noted that when you switch to warmer tones or “Night Shift” mode on a tablet can help maintain your body’s ability to secrete melatonin, a hormone that prepares your body to sleep. It’s a worth a try if it means better sleep!
